Description of Contents

This collection includes five volumes of highway information and assorted print photographs, negatives, and slides. The volumes were compiled by the Hennepin County Public Works Department between the 1890s and 1918 and contain contracts, work orders, and minimal correspondence pertaining to country roads. The Roadwork Contract Index is an index to the Roadwork Contracts volumes. The index is organized by county road number and includes basic location and descriptive information for each listed county road. The photographs, negatives, and slides depict county roads, public works employees, and equipment from the 1920s to 1980s. The bulk of the photos are from the 1960s to 1980s.

Access

The physical collection is available for use in Special Collections at Minneapolis Central Library during the department's open hours. Photographs from this collection are available in the Hennepin County Public Works Collection in the Hennepin County Library Digital Collections.

History

Hennepin County was formed by the Minnesota Territorial Legislature in 1852. Minneapolis was soon named the county seat. Through its Public Works department, the county maintains an extensive system of county roads and highways.

The Land Acquisition Group is a component of Hennepin County's Public Works Community Works program. Established in 1994, Hennepin Community Works is nationally recognized as an innovative, county-wide, urban redevelopment program.

The volumes were transferred from Hennepin County Public Works Land Acquisition Group in March 2018 as accession 2018.05. The photographs were transferred from Hennepin County Public Works in May 2019 as accession 2019.18.
