History

The Minneapolis Public Library was founded in 1885. In 1889, the first library building was erected in downtown Minneapolis. Hennepin County Library began in 1922 as a rural bookmobile service to residents outside the Minneapolis city limits. While a merger of the two library systems was considered at various times, the libraries grew independently until the early twenty-first century. On January 1, 2008, the two libraries merged as the Hennepin County Library.
