Correspondence compiled by Howard S. Abbott. Most letters are incoming correspondence addressed to Howard S. Abbott, William Lochren, Oliver Mink, or J.D. Springer from 1864 to 1942. All men are connected to Abbott, often through his relationship with the railroads. The bulk of the documents are routine correspondence without obvious topics. The William Lochren series contains many letters addressed to Lochren as Commissioner of Pensions (1893-1896).

Biographical / Historical
Howard S. Abbott was an attorney active in Minneapolis from the 1880s to 1940s. Abbott was master in chancery for several railroad receiverships and for the U.S. Federal Court. He was a lecturer at the University of Minnesota law school. Abbott was an autograph collector, and some of the autographs he collected are included in the Louis Dodge Autograph Collection at the Hennepin County Library. Abbott died in Minnesota on January 7, 1944 at age 80.
William Lochren was a U.S. Federal Judge from 1896 to 1908 and a prominent early Minneapolis attorney. Lochren moved to St. Anthony (now Minneapolis) in 1857 and soon established a law practice. From 1861 to 1863, he served in the Union Army. In 1868, Lochren was elected a state sentator, and he later served as Minneapolis city attorney. In 1882, he was elected a District Judge, a position he held until he was appointed U.S. Commissioner of Pensions in 1893. In 1896, Lochren became the first Minnesota resident appointed U.S. District Judge for Minnesota. Lochren died in Minneapolis on January 27, 1912.
