History
Emergency Lakes Environmental Coalition Task Force (ELECT) was founded in September 1987 in opposition to a proposed 24-story Calhoun Beach Club addition near Lake Calhoun (now Bde Maka Ska). The group created a coalition of neighborhood organizations, environmental organizations, and interested residents to oppose the development. They succeed in limiting the height of the planned development and enacting city regulations to limit the height of buildings near the chain of lakes. The group disbanded in 1990.
ELECT was run by a group of core members, including Sally Anson, David Frenkel, Arlene Fried, Katherine Harding, Joan Higinbotham, Harriet Horwitz, Kenneth Moritz, Jan Prescott, Frederick Thorson, and Steven Woldum. Many of these same community members had earlier opposed the construction of Lake Point Condominiums (2950 Dean Pkwy.) and contributed to the founding of the Cedar-Isles-Dean Neighborhood Association. The core members received donations and support from a larger community.
ELECT and another citizen group, Minneapolis Park LoverS (MPLS), joined in a lawsuit between the building developers and the City of Minneapolis to oppose the Calhoun Beach Club addition. An eventual settlement between the parties led to a height ammendment to the city's Shoreline Ordinance. The Calhoun Beach Club addition was constructed at a shorter height.
