History

Following the settlement of the Hollman v. Cisneros lawsuit in 1995, Heritage Park was constructed through a major redesign and redevelopment of the Sumner-Glenwood Neighborhood in Near North Minneapolis. The Hollman settlement concluded that low-income, public housing was overly concentrated and racially segregated in Sumner-Glenwood. The settlement called for the dispersal of these affordable housing units throughout the region and the redevelopment of the north Minneapolis neighborhood.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, housing projects including Sumner Field, Olson, Lyndale, and Glenwood were demolished, and the redevelopment process began. An implementation committee including governmental and community representatives oversaw the planning and implementation of the Near Northside Redevelopment. The area was renamed Heritage Park in 2001, and celebrated its grand opening in 2005.

Designed by McCormack Baron Salazar and Legacy Management and Development Corporation, Heritage Park incorporated a mixture of housing types and amenities. In addition to apartments and subsidized townhomes, the development included market-price and owner-occupied residences. The street grid was altered to better connect Heritage Park to the rest of Minneapolis. Sidewalks and parks were incorporated within the site. Although the original plan called for 900 total homes, some of the units were never built.
