  • Creation: 1972 - 1979

The collection is available for use in Special Collections at Minneapolis Central Library during the department's open hours.

The Lowry Hill East Neighborhood Association (LHENA) grew out of conversation between fifteen residents who gathered on August 4, 1970, to discuss neighborhood issues and trajectory. Forming a volunteer board of directors, the residents formally incorporated LHENA on February 18, 1971. The board designated various committees to focus on specific tasks such as housing, social development, education, membership, and ecology.

Lowry Hill East is in the Uptown area of Minneapolis and is also known colloquially as “The Wedge” due to its geographically triangular shape. It is bordered by Lyndale Avenue to the east, Hennepin Avenue to the west, and Lake Street to the south.

According LHENA’s website, the group’s goal remains “to exhibit and encourage neighborhood leadership and participation from all community members, provide a forum for community participation, and to promote a vision of the neighborhood.”
