Minneapolis Health and Sanitation Survey Maps
Description of Contents
The collection contains maps showing the sanitation facitilities (water lines, sewer lines, and outhouses) located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1934. Maps typically include one block, showing buildings, roads, addresses, and geographic features. Occassionally, building use and construction materials are noted. Maps are drawn in pencil on tracing paper. They may have been traced from a Sanborn Fire Insurance map of Minneapolis. No index map or key is extant.
It is not clear how many districts each ward contained in 1934. It is possible some survey maps may never have been created or may have been removed from this collection before it was received by Hennepin County Library.

History
In January 1934, the City of Minneapolis began a health and sanitation survey. Under the direction of Minneapolis Health Commissioner F.E. Harrington, between 40 and 72 employees canvassed door-to-door within the city recording information on wells, sewer hookups, water hookups, and outhouses at each property. Workers left a survey card with each family, on which the family was expected to record the communicable diseases they had experienced in 1933. These cards were to be mailed to the federal government as part of a separate survey.
The survey program was funded through the Civil Works Administration (CWA), a New Deal-era program of the United States federal government and a predecessor to the Works Progress Administration. When the CWA ended in March 1934, the Minneapolis health and sanitation survey was suspended. It is unclear whether the survey was ever completed.
