Description of Contents

The collection consists of meeting materials, correspondence, administrative documents, building plans, photographic prints and negatives, and reports documenting the work of the Minneapolis Historic Preservation Commission. The collection includes nine boxes of various papers that span the years 1970-1987. These papers include meeting agenda and minutes, surveys and reports on proposed preservation sites, correspondence, various organizational documents pertaining to commission history, objectives, and goals, and so on. Included in the collection is one over-sized box containing specific materials on the redevelopment of the Milwaukee Avenue/Seward West area. Some collection materials were donated by Patricia Donovan Baker, a former HPC member.

The collection also includes a large number of encapsulated building plans primarily depicting the restoration of Milwaukee Avenue and several single item monographs put together over the years by the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission.

History

The Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) was created in 1972. The City of Minneapolis created this particular commission for preserving the cultural, social, economic, religious, political, and architectural heritage of Minneapolis. Tasks and objectives of the HPC include: advising the City Council, evaluating historic buildings and districts, conducting research for eligible sites, designating sites as local landmarks, designating sites for demolition, providing education programs and outreach programs, creating a plan for preservation, and administering a preservation plan.

Donor Information

Strip negatives (MMHPC0340-MHPC2638) were donated by the Minnesota Historical Society in March 2022 as accession 2022.24.

Processing Information

This finding aid was greatly expanded by Kari Weber in 2012. Additional photographs were processed by Edward Hathaway and added to the collection by Jenna Himsl in August 2018. Negatives were processed by Abbey Meyerholz and added to the collection by Jenna Jacobs in July 2022.
